Steel-cut oats

This is my own take on a classic. Its genesis is from Alton Brown’s show “Good Eats,” though I have made it my own. We love it!
Steel-cut Oats
Ingredients

1 cup steel-cut oats (not Scottish or Irish oats as these are a less coarse variation, though they can be used in a pinch)
2 to 2 ½ cups [...]

Sunriver, here we come!

Going to Sunriver, OR for a winter vacation today! The roads are all snowy, due to a large storm that came through western and central Oregon a few days ago. New snow is falling as I type! [I hope you like the effect, courtesy of WordPress.] We’ll be staying at The Pines, where we usually [...]

Recipe – Smoked Whole Turkey (where’s my Hibachi?)

This is a combination of a few recipes I’ve found recently. I plan to follow it this year in the hopes that I can somehow approach the quality of food my Dad’s 50+-year old clay hibachi pot yields. He got it while on a tour of duty as a naval aviator during the Korean War [...]

Got a skill or talent you want to share?

Check out SkillWho.com. Yes it’s another social networking site, but it’s pretty thin. Just set up a profile, answer some simple questions about your “real” passions in life (not simply what you do, but who you are?) and see if anyone out there needs what you got. And vice-versa. As they say on their website:
Find [...]

Nifty Google Maps integration site

So I was trying to use Google Maps to determine the distance I was walking around my business park, and while it was useful to get an estimate, it wasn’t as detailed as I wanted. Same goes for the odometer in my car – not (buzz word alert!) granular enough. I came across this site that allows you [...]

Offsite data backup service for only $10 a month – gotta like it!

I must say I am particularly happy about this new data backup service I came across for the home or small business user. It’s a remote data backup service that is both easy and cost-effective. It is simply the best method of backing up your data for several significant reasons: it is inexpensive, convenient, secure, [...]

Raiders win

Today I watched the Raiders play a very solid game. The only thing is, I can’t tell if it’s just that K.C. is really bad, or if the Raiders have gelled as a team and found some of that commitment to excellence that is the team motto.
In all, I thought the O line was dominant. [...]

The coolest theatre EVER

There are many places in the greater Portland area to spend your discretionary dollars. I’d have to say one of the best is at Cinetopia, which is across the river in Vancouver. We’ve been there a few times in the past, and I am hoping we go this Saturday as one of our few real dates since Saundra came [...]

Barview Jetty County Campground/Park

In case anyone is looking for a decent place to stay on the Oregon Coast, check out this place. We stayed there for a few nights this past summer and thought it was pretty damn good, as far as county campgrounds go. It was clean and well-maintained; there are plenty of really good, semi-private, large camp [...]

Sad but true!

This is a cute parody a friend just emailed me. It’s so spot on it’s pathetic. Of course, you could substitute many of the “my boss” signs with “my client,” but you get the idea.

Btw, 2 of my 6 projects (well, one project with 6 phases) are in “red” due to my client’s inability to sign [...]
